An Experience of Natural and Cultural Heritage
The Idrija Geopark covers the area of the Municipality of Idrija. Its rich natural and cultural heritage makes it one of the most fascinating regions of Slovenia. Its position at the crossroads of the Alps and the Dinarides accounts for an extremely diverse and varied terrain with deep ravines, vast plateaus, and high peaks offering vistas ranging from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea. Through the centuries, generations who lived here were adept at sustainable living with the region’s natural resources, and despite the 500-year-old history of mercury mining in the area, the region’s natural environment remains pristine and unblemished. Despite difficult living conditions, the region of Idrija is home to kind, resourceful, and creative people.
