The Global Geoparks Network – GGN was established in 2004 at the official seat of the UNESCO organisation in Paris. This is a nongovernmental, non-profit and voluntary network supporting cooperation among geoparks, and uniting government agencies, nongovernmental organisations, scientists and local communities from countries throughout the world into a unique international association. It operates in line with UNESCO's rules on the protection and conservation of world heritage.

In the same year, an agreement was signed with the European Geoparks Network (EGN), which undertook the task of collecting and submitting the applications of European geoparks and connecting them with the Global Geoparks Network. Under the agreement, the European Geoparks Network was assigned the task of integrating national geoparks in Europe into the European Geoparks Network. The members of the European Geoparks Network are automatically included in the Global Geoparks Network.

At present, the network unites 77 geoparks in 25 member states.
