A geopark is an area with exceptional natural features in which the local inhabitants join efforts to protect nature and provide for rural development. Alongside geological features, all other types of natural and cultural heritage are represented in a geopark. The main tasks of a geopark include the protection and conservation of geological heritage, education for different groups – classrooms in nature, and cooperation with local communities. The connectedness, respect and coexistence of local inhabits with nature is of major importance.

A geopark unites and connects nature, culture and tradition with various activities, museums, information centres, restaurants, tourist farms and local handicraft shops. It supports and encourages the creation and marketing of domestic arts and crafts, the development of tourism in rural areas, and provides for the training of local guides. The principal task of geoparks is the protection of nature and its promotion.
